  1. What is their process? How much time and input is required from you? How do they work to produce the results that you’re looking for? How many rounds of edits are included?

  1. How will they maintain and amplify your brand voice? They need to be confident in their process to seamlessly take over your authentic voice and sound just like you so no one is the wiser.

  1. Are you in alignment with how you want AI to be used (or not used) in your work together?

  1. Check their portfolio to see if they are adaptable. Have they written for a range of types of voices? This can make you feel confident they can adapt to your unique voice. Does it demonstrate that they can write in a range of styles…from a long-from blog article to a short, punchy Facebook ad.

  1. Do you feel something when you read through their portfolio? If you can emotionally connect with other businesses, think of how much you’ll love it when it’s for your own!

  1. How long will it take to see the first draft? Don’t get caught with someone who over-promises and then doesn’t deliver! My clients get a timeline. I communicate with them about the progress of the project regularly. You get your copy by the deadline we set, often even sooner!

  1. Do they have a team of people behind them? Freelance copywriters can get caught drowning in work and end up delivering products late. Or, they never replying to your emails because they’re trying to do everything themselves – from marketing to researching to writing and admin. Or, they deliver sub-par writing because they’re too busy to take the time to do them well. Maybe they simply don’t have the skills needed to do them at an expert level. Make sure your copywriter is running an efficient business so that you get your copy project on time and get the best possible quality.

  1. What values are important to you? You want someone who cares about running their business in a way that is aligned with your own values. Because of our job as a copywriter, we have to get behind your mission and message. It will show in the writing if we don’t really believe in it!

  1. Is their personality one that you’ll love working with? You’ll be spending a lot of time going deep together, so make sure they have a personality that you’ll want around for a while.

  1. Do you have a designer or tech VA you work with regularly? You’ll want each piece of the project to be in-sync and it’s always easier when everyone is already familiar with working together.
